Bury started this game quickly and looked the better side in the opening 25 minutes, with Gaz Andrews the architect in midfield. Andrews played Steven Wood through on goal early on, only to see his shot well saved by the Horwich 'keeper. Bury were then reduced to 10 men on the half hour mark, with Wood seeing his marching orders after a coming together with the Horwich centre-half.
This did not really unsettle Bury and they continued to be the better team despite having less men. In the second half, Bury introduced Derrick Aljoe who gave them pace and power up-front. And with 15 minutes to go Aljoe should have played in either Spencer Woods or Alex Lundy. In this 3 on 1 situation, Aljoe's pass was intercepted in what would have been a clear goal-scoring opportunity.
In the dying moments of the game Horwich booked their place in the next round with the scrappiest of goals. As Bury failed to clear their lines in the 6 yard box, the Horwich midfielder pounced to stumble the ball home, taking a couple of deflections en-route to goal.
Next up for the Old Boys is a top of the table clash away at Castle Hill, kick-off 2.30 pm away on Saturday 29th October.
